Housing Services
Housing Services: FAQ

APPLYING FOR HOUSING

How do I apply for housing (Lincoln Park)?
The Housing Agreement will come with your admissions packet to DePaul. Only students who have been officially admitted to the University may apply for housing. There is no deadline to apply, however we process Agreements on a first-come first-served basis, so the earlier you apply the better. We consider November and December early.

Please complete your Housing Agreement (either for Lincoln Park housing or for University Center/UCC housing, but not for both) and return it to the Department of Housing Services with your $500 pre-payment.

What is a pre-payment?
Your Housing Agreement cannot be processed without the $500 pre-payment.
Your $500 pre-payment may be made by check, money order or credit card. Checks or money orders can be made out to “DePaul University.” Your check or money order should be enclosed with your Agreement. Credit card payments can be made through our Cashier’s Office at 773.325.7810. Please include a note with your Agreement letting us know if you have paid by credit card.

What do my building/room/roommate preferences mean?
On your Housing Agreement there are sections for: Building Preferences; Room Style Preferences; and Roommate Preferences. These three types of preferences are processed first by mutual roommate preference, then by style preference, then building preference.
For example, if your first style preference is a double room, and you rank the buildings: 1. Belden-Racine, 2. Clifton-Fullerton, 3.Munroe, your preferences will be entered as a double room in Belden Racine, then a double room in Clifton- Fullerton, then a double room in Munroe. Please be aware that this means you might get a double room in your second or third building choice before you would get a second or third room style choice in your first building preference.

When do I get my confirmation?
As we begin receiving Housing Agreements in November, we will begin to confirm Freshman & Transfer students for a place on the campus of their choice. This confirmation guarantees the student a place on the campus they applied for, but it does not correspond to a particular room/apartment, as those are not made until June.

What is the cancellation policy?
A freshman or transfer student who wants to cancel their Housing Agreement must do so in writing. You can send your written cancellation to us by:
Fax: 773.325.7221
E-mail: housing@depaul.edu
U.S. Mail:
Department of Housing Services
2345 N. Sheffield Ave
Suite 301
Chicago, IL 60614

WAIT LIST

My daughter/son is on the wait list. What does this mean, and will they receive housing?
We process Agreements on a first-come, first-served basis, however once we have received more Agreements than the number of spaces we have allocated for Freshman & Transfer students, we will begin a waitlist for the campus. The waitlist is processed in the same order as the initial confirmations: on a first-come, first-served basis. Once we have started the waitlist, we must wait until students who have already been confirmed a space cancel their Agreement to confirm students off the waitlist, in the order we received their Agreements.

What is the cancellation policy for wait-listed students?
Students who cancel before they are assigned a space, when they are still on the wait list are given a refund of their housing deposit. If they remain a DePaul student, then the charge will be credited to their student account.

However, a student who is on the wait list may be assigned at any time, since Housing Services believes they want housing. A student who has not notified Housing that they no longer want to be on the wait list and is assigned housing will be held accountable for the cancellation charge.

ROOM ASSIGNMENTS

How are freshmen and transfer housing assignments made?
Assignments are processed by the order they were received and then individually on preferences based on what spaces are still available at the time the Agreement is processed.

When will we receive our housing assignments?
Assignments are made during the first half of June for freshmen and transfers, sophmores participate in the Room Reservation process during winter quarter.

What if I want a single room?
Most of our limited number of singles (in traditional-style residence halls) go to upperclassmen. We have a small number of singles available for Freshmen & Transfer Students and we assign these on a first-come first-served basis. The earlier your Agreement is in, the better your chances are of getting a single.

What are the differences in room types?
Double v Super Double – Two students live in a regular double room and share a bathroom with two suitemates or a community bathroom with residents of their floor or wing. Two students living in a super double either share a bathroom with just one suitemate who is in a single room, OR have a room that is larger than campus average.

Single v Super Single – A student living in a single room shares a bathroom with two suitemates who live in a double room. A student living in a super single room shares a bathroom with just one suitemate, who lives in his/her own single room.

Apartment Styles for Freshmen – Where space allows, freshmen sometimes live in McCabe or Sanctuary, which are residence hall apartments. These apartments require residents to sign in their guests but most feature a full kitchen. A smaller meal plan is required for residents of these apartments.

What if I am not happy with my assignment?
The Room Change policy begins the third week of fall quarter if a student wants to change rooms. Please refer to the Room Change policy.

When/how/under what circumstances can I change rooms?
Room change forms are available beginning the third week of each quarter. Room change requests are granted on a space-available basis. If a student wants to change rooms because of a roommate conflict, he/she must consult with his/her resident advisor (RA) and/or residence director (RD) and discuss the issues at hand before a room change will be considered. In order submit a room change request in this case, an RD must approve the request in writing on the room change request form, and again, if space is available, a room change may occur.

YOUR ROOM

What is my room like (dimensions, square footage, furniture, etc.)?
What is my room like (dimensions, square footage, furniture, etc.)?
Dimensions: Room dimensions vary. Students who are unsure about whether something will fit in their space are advised, if at all possible, to move into the space first, then bring additional items if needed.

Furniture:
Belden-Racine, Clifton-Fullerton, Corcoran, Munroe, Seton Hall, Sanctuary Hall, Townhomes, University Hall and University Center (UCC) in the Loop offer extra-long twin beds, while all other beds are standard twin. Other furniture is updated as needed.

What is the difference between an extension cord (not permitted in student housing) and a power strip (permitted)?
An extension cord does not have a surge protector and is a fire hazard, endangering you and your neighbors. A power strip does include a surge protector, an on/off switch, and several outlets. When in doubt whether something you have is prohibited in campus housing, please visit your area office.

How do I get HBO?
HBO channels are available to residents for an extra charge by calling College Cable at 1-800-472-2054, extension 222.

Can you move my data/voice port (i.e. from the living room to my bedroom)?
No we cannot move it. The location of the data/voice ports are determined during the construction of each building and it would negatively affect the integrity of a building to move them.

How do I put in a work order?
Go to the Housing Services Web site at http://housing.depaul.edu. Choose Lincoln Park, then “Current Resident.” Under “Forms” choose “Work Order Form.” Choose the appropriate Work Order form, and follow the instructions, remembering to be as detailed as possible.

What is my telephone number?
Your telephone number is: 773-687-XXXX. The last five digits are printed on a label next to your telephone jack. For instance, if you have a five-digit number printed next to your jack, such as 7-9999, that number is your extension, and 773-687-9999 is your full phone number. Student Housing staff will use this number and voice mail to contact residents, unless the student provides his/her residence director with a different telephone number that includes either voice mail or an answering machine.

How do I make an outgoing call?
On campus calls: dial the five digit extension to call any University employee, student room, office, or department. All calls between University extensions are free. Local and long distance calls: local: 9 + 7-digit number + wait for tone + PBN (your Pae-Tec pin number).

Can I use Drano?
Students living on campus are not permitted to use Drano or similar products, as they are a safety hazard. If your drain is slow, please submit a work order through the Housing Services Web site instead.

What happens if my roommate(s) and I fail our facility inspection?
Students who fail their initial inspection have the opportunity to rectify the violation before staff performs a return inspection. If students fail their second inspection, the offending item may be confiscated (candles, extension cords, etc), and the student will be documented and put through the Residential Education judicial process.

Can I get another bed (or dresser, or chair, etc) added to my room?
DePaul housing provides only one of each type of furniture per resident (i.e. one chair, bed, dresser, etc.). Students are permitted to bring in outside furniture if space permits. Residents are not permitted to remove University-provided furniture from their rooms.

Can I get DePaul-provided furniture I don’t want taken awaystored?
All furniture provided by DePaul is required to stay in your room. Students are permitted to move furniture and/or store it, as long as it remains in their room/apartment. Moving any University-provided furniture from your room could result in fees and/or judicial action.

Can I have a refrigerator/microwave in my room?
Students are permitted to have one refrigerator and one microwave in their traditional-style residence hall room. The refrigerator must not exceed 4.6 cubic feet, while the microwave must not exceed 900 watts. Students may purchase a refrigerator and/or microwave, or rent a microfridge unit from Residence Hall Council (RHC).

What appliances can I use in my room?
Fire and smoke present dangers to the safety of the campus housing community and require all
residents to be cautious. Residents using hair dryers or hot irons are not permitted to leave them
unattended while plugged in. For fire safety reasons, and to prevent electrical overloading, the following items are prohibited in all campus housing. Please note that should hall staff discover these items in a student room, they may remove them on-site:
The use of any electrical appliance without a UL label approved for safety.
The use of refrigerator units exceeding 4.6 cubic feet or of multiple refrigerators in a unit.
The use of halogen bulbs.
The use of extension cords or multiple plugs, except for power strips with built-in circuit breakers.
The use or storage of any electrical appliance in residents’ rooms that is rated higher than 900 watts or that has an exposed heating element.

Prohibited Appliances – The following is a non-exhaustive list of prohibited appliances in
Belden-Racine, Clifton-Fullerton, Corcoran, Munroe, Seton, and University halls:
The use of toasters, toaster ovens, popcorn poppers, percolators, coffee makers, electric grills, George Foreman grills, and irons anywhere but in kitchens or laundry rooms;
When using these items in the designated places, please monitor them at all times, and remember to unplug and remove them when finished.

Can I have overnight guests in my room?
Yes, residents are permitted to have overnight guests as long as it is okay with your roommate(s). Overnight guests are allowed a maximum of three nights within a 14-day period.

LIVING ON CAMPUS

Where do I get my mail?
All Lincoln Park residents get their mail at the Student Housing Mail Center on the third floor of the Student Center in Suite 317. Students can also pick up their mailbox key in the Mail Center.

My ID does not work. What do I do?
Go to the front desk of Housing Services, Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. If it is outside of these hours and you not have access, go to your building’s front desk (or Sanctuary’s front desk if you live in the University Apartment Communities) to page a facility assistant for trouble shooting.

Where do I go for a lock out?
If you are locked out of your room/apartment, go to your building’s front desk (if you live in UAC, go to the Sanctuary Hall front desk) and ask the desk receptionist to page the FRD (9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday) or the FA (outside of regular business hours). There is a $25 charge for all lock-outs.

What is community damage billing?
When damages in common areas occur and Student Housing staff does not know who caused the damage, charges will be split among the community. Charges will be divided on a case-by-case basis (residents of entire building, or a floor, wing, suite, etc.) Student Housing staff will investigate each incident. If a student or students are found responsible for the damage/vandalism, they will be subject to repair fees and judicial action.

Students who have information about who might be responsible for damage in common areas should contact their residence director, facility residence director, or resident advisor. Community Damage fees being assessed to the residents of a wing, floor, or building, will be placed directly on each residents’ Student Account; residents will receive an e-mail notification if they are billed.

You should contact or go to your Area Office if: You need to check-in or check-out of your residence hall unit; You have a question about how to place a work order, or need to follow up on a work order request; You need bunk bed pins or light bulbs; You have lost your key and/or have had your locks changed; You need to turn in your Housing Condition Report; You have questions about your facility inspection or about a facility project in your residence hall unit; You want to turn in an application to be a facility assistant.

How can I get a job with housing?
Whenever student positions become available, Housing posts them on the Career Center’s Web site at: http://careercenter.depaul.edu/. Please check that site periodically if you’d like to work in Housing Services.

Where can I secure my bicycle?
All traditional halls have bike racks located in the front of each building. You can also register with Public Safety to use the bike cage under McCabe Hall.

Why are all of the cigarette bins/ashtrays so far away from the residence hall doors?
Many students, staff, and faculty congregate around entrances to smoke. Unfortunately, this causes health concerns for non-smokers who need to enter buildings and to do so must walk through cigarette smoke. All cigarette receptacles have been moved to encourage smokers to move away from entrances.

What's the difference between Residential Education, Housing Services, and/or Student Housing?
Residential Education is responsible for fostering a residential community by using the residence hall as a classroom. Your Resident Advisor (RA) and Residence Director (RD) work for Residential Education. Housing Services is in charge of housing charges, room assignments, building and room inspections, your hall’s front desk, the Student Housing Mail Center and more. Your Facility Assistant (FA) and Facility Residence Director (FRD) work for Housing Services. Student Housing is what we call both Residential Education and Housing Services, since these departments work together to provide students with the premiere residential experience.

That big comfy chair in the lounge sure would look great in my room. Why can't I "borrow" it and put it in my room?
Common area furniture may never be removed from its original location, as this is disrespectful of other community members and a fire hazard. Students found with common area furniture in their rooms will fail their room inspections and could face other consequences.
